The Untold Truth About Wedding Dresses
After a decade in the bridal industry, there are things I wish every bride knew before she ever stepped into a boutique. This week, I'm telling you all of it.

Wendy Scroggins
Welcome to Wedding Wednesdays with Wendy — a series where I share the real, unfiltered truth about wedding dresses, the bridal industry, and everything in between. I've spent over a decade inside this world and I believe every bride deserves to go into the process informed, confident, and excited. So let's talk about the things most boutiques won't tell you.
1. Wedding Dress Sizes Are Not What You Think
Let me give you a real example. I am a size 8 on the bust, a size 10 on the waist, and a size 6 on the hips — but my wedding dress size is a size 14. That number isn't a reflection of your body. It's a reflection of a sizing system that was never designed for real women.
This is exactly why every dress at Lily and Lace is custom made. We genuinely believe it makes a better product for the bride. If you are curvy, if you don't fit neatly into traditional ready-to-wear sizing, or if you simply want a dress that actually fits your body — custom sizing is the way to go.
And here's the part most boutiques don't tell you upfront: we include the price of custom sizing in your gown. You will not be hit with a surprise upcharge after you've already said yes. Most designers don't offer custom sizing at all because it's incredibly difficult to do when you're mass producing. We make one dress at a time, because your measurements require it. That's not a limitation — it's the whole point.
2. Brides Care More About Quality Than Labels
Something has shifted in bridal. Brides are caring much less about designer labels and much more about the quality of the dress itself — how it's made, how it fits, how it feels. And honestly? That's the right instinct.
We have plenty of samples to try on at Lily and Lace, and everything is customizable — some semi, some fully. You can also order a dress exactly as it is if you love it as-is. We currently feature Elizabeth Lee Bridal and the Lily and Lace Collection, and we are actively adding more designers to bring more variety to our brides. More on that soon.
3. A Shorter Timeline Doesn't Have to Mean Panic
I hear from brides all the time who feel like it's too late, like they've missed the window. Here's what I want you to know: we can make these dresses faster than a traditional 6–8 month turnaround — unless it's a super custom design that requires more time from the start.
Because we make one dress at a time, we have more control over the timeline than a manufacturer producing thousands of gowns at once. If you're closer to your wedding date than you'd like to be, don't give up. Call us. Let's figure it out together.
4. You Don't Need a Big Group for Dress Shopping
I want to say this as gently as possible, because I know it can be complicated: you do not need a big group for your wedding dress appointment. Others can overwhelm you. Too many opinions can cloud the one that matters most — yours.
If you have someone in your life you feel obligated to include but you're worried they might bring you down or add stress to the experience, you can always show them the dress later. Bring them back when you've already found the one and you just want to share the joy. You are allowed to protect your experience.
Your appointment is private, one-on-one, and completely unhurried. Bring the people who lift you up. Leave the stress at the door.
